Going beyond traditional swim instruction, ISR teaches children how to survive in the water. Depending on your child’s age, your child will learn different levels of Self-Rescue skills, including a roll-back-to-float and/or a swim-float-swim. Read more about the skills your child will learn.
The idea behind Infant Swimming Resource was born in 1966 when its founder, Harvey Barnett, Ph.D, was just 18 years old. As an active lifeguard, Barnett witnessed the tragic aftermath when a neighbor's child drowned. At that moment, he vowed to do everything possible to ensure not one more child drowns.
Barnett began teaching young children to swim and observed how they responded to certain types of communication, instruction and different techniques -- even with non-verbal infants. This was the beginning research phase for what is now Infant Swimming Resource’s comprehensive infant swimming education and Self-Rescue program.
Today, Dr. Barnett, is recognized by the State Board of Medical Examiners in Florida, Arizona and California, and is the only, non-medical doctor that has been invited to speak on the topic of pediatric drowning prevention during Pediatric Grand Rounds presentations at hospitals across the United States.
At ISR, your child’s safety is our first priority. Each lesson is uniquely tailored to your child’s needs based on comprehensive assessment and continual monitoring of your child’s health and skill attainment. Because every child learns at his or her own pace, your child will be gently guided through each skill level.
ISR has safely delivered over 8,000,000 effective lessons teaching water Self-Rescue skills to more than 300,000 infants and toddlers and has educated parents and medical experts nationwide on water safety techniques and proven instruction methods. To date, ISR has 800 documented cases of children using ISR techniques to save themselves from drowning.
Your child is not the only one who will learn during lessons. Infant Swimming Resource’s program includes comprehensive parent education on aquatic safety and drowning prevention. For more information on keeping your family safe in and around the water read tips on ISR’s Safety Check List.
Hi! My name is Becki Pinckard, I am an Arizona native. I have been married to my husband for 28 yrs. We have 4 children (2 boys, 2 girls, ages 16 through 25) and one sweet grand baby girl! As a family we also raise & show pigs.
I enjoy working out, as well as being outdoors, spending time with my kids/family traveling and I LOVE teaching ISR! 2021 is my 22nd season teaching ISR lessons!
In addition to being an ISR Master Instructor, my husband and I also own an Industrial Steel construction company, an Air Conditioning Service/Construction company, and are very involved in our church. We have a busy, fulfilling life!
I wanted to become an ISR Instructor after my 2 oldest children went through the program and I saw what a complete difference it made in our life! It was SO much more enjoyable to be around water and to know that my kids had the ability to save themselves should they find themselves in the water alone. I yearned for more people to know about this program. I thought the best way would to do that would be to become a Certified ISR Instructor myself & to change lives one student at a time. So, that is just what I did back in August of 2000. Now, I am also a Certified Master Instructor which gives me the opportunity to train individuals from all over North America to become ISR Instructors.
I absolutely love being an ISR Instructor because of the feeling that I get EACH and EVERY time I witness a student roll to their back independently. I KNOW then, that they are an aquatic problem solver and when all other barriers fail them that they will not fail themselves! I get to witness that each and every day - it NEVER gets old! It is also extremely rewarding and fulfilling when I get a call or email from a parent of one of my students in the middle of winter telling me that their child (who has not been in ISR lessons since last summer) fell into the freezing pool water and did EXACTLY what I taught them to do!
It is an honor to be an Instructor for the most outstanding Self-Rescue swim program in the world!
ISR is the most educational and effective survival swimming instruction program available.
For more than 50 years, Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) has been teaching children critical Self-Rescue skills -- giving children the competence and confidence to safely enjoy the water. ISR’s technique teaches babies from 6 months to 6 years of age how to save themselves if they were to end up in the water alone.
